Flood Safety Awareness Week: How to Prepare for the Unexpected

Understanding the Needs of the Deaf & Hard of Hearing

I just got back from an incredible experience with the Arkansas Association of the Deaf (AAD) and their first statewide Town Hall Meeting. With over 100 citizens in attendance, it was an amazing opportunity to exchange ideas and share experiences about enhancing 9-1-1 emergency service for the deaf and hard of hearing as well as for all citizens.

When you really think about it…what information wouldn’t you want 9-1-1 to have?

Before I began working in public safety, I was one of those people who didn’t think about 9-1-1 in my everyday life. I have dialed 9-1-1 once, when a roommate had an accident at home, and I panicked. I remember holding my cell phone in one hand and our landline phone in the other hand and choosing to call 9-1-1 from our landline so that the ambulance would know what house we were in. But now I live in a large complex, and I don’t have a landline. So what can I do to be sure response teams can find me?
